Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
